Social Projects

There are a number of social projects undertaken by Smyrna that operate on our campus and also within our local communities. These are funded by various friends of Smyrna, by sponsors and by some of the money raised by the social businesses we operate at our Smyrna campus. You can find out about how to sponsor Smyrna here.

Smyrna social helps
At the beginning of every new academic year, Smyrna provides a 'One-time Help' programme to poor students in Ooty and the nearby villages, by way of supplying items to assist with their education this includes uniforms, notebooks and stationery.

In addition to this, we provide other forms of social help for the community on the third Saturday of each month we open the Smyrna campus to anyone in need of medical help and offer free consultations with a noted neurologist from Coimbatore.

Smyrna Shelter (Home for the Aged)
In this fast-paced, modern world, neglecting elderly women seems to be one of the prevailing, common evils. To counter this problem, the Smyrna Shelter was established ten years ago as a 'Home for the Aged'. At present, we have five women in the Shelter who had all been abandoned by their families. They are loved and accepted by the Smyrna community and are content living in the beautiful, natural environment here, where we look after their health and nutrition and provide medical assistance when needed. They involve themselves in many activities on the campus, and the buoyant routine helps them to forget their past and think about a positive future.

Smyrna social (Help for the aged poor)
Providing a hot lunch in the cold climes of Ooty to the poor, elderly people in our nearby communities is another way we can offer help. One day every week, we provide this service to around 60 older people from selected areas in and around Ooty. These people live far below the poverty line, and include street dwellers and rag-pickers.

Each person attending this session is usually also offered a counselling session or prayer before they are given a wholesome meal. In addition, they are provided with a monthly ration parcel and during the Christmas season, they are gifted with a new set of clothes and a special Christmas lunch. Medical and social assistance is also extended to these poor people, if needed.

Smyrna Girls Hostel
This hostel was started on our Smyrna campus to provide a boarding facility for poor, adolescent girls. These girls live in the rural areas in the Nilgiris, and now study in Ooty but without the 'Smyrna Girls Hostel', they would not have been able to continue with their studies. Presently, we have 14 girls in our hostel, all aged between 12 and 17, and some of the girls are from Toda tribes.

Dire family situations, severe poverty or the sudden demise of a parent are just of the obstacles experienced by these girls in pursuing an education. The hostel provides them with a home that not only caters for their basic needs but also provides support and instils in them the confidence to become successful in their future lives.

Smyrna vocational courses
Computer literacy is vital for many young people now, to ensure they can find successful careers. However, the rural areas near to Smyrna are home to many poor workers and farmers, whose children find it virtually impossible to enrol in mainstream computer education courses due to travel and financial constraints. To help poor children acquire computer knowledge, Smyrna established a computer centre on its premises. Thanks to the support of generous benefactors, we have continued to upgrade this facility and we are now able to offer advanced courses for the students.

We are very encouraged that several physically challenged children are among the students now benefitting from this centre, and our sponsor children are using it for summer and holiday courses.

In addition to the computer courses, we run a community polytechnic on our campus, offering five different courses to women and, at present, more than 70 students are enrolled. The successful students will be given government certificates, which enable them to get bank loans and will help them to pursue successful careers.

We are always looking for support to improve our training centre, with new equipment, expertise and financial support if you would like to help, please do get in touch.
