A GLIMPSE OF SMYRNA FELLOWSHIP TRUST OOTY

We are a well established Non Governmental Organization dedicated to helping the families and children of the less privileged and people who have been affected by natural calamities. We provide educational , medical, and basic amenities help to sponsored children. Shelter and employment is given to adults. Our main areas of social work are in the regions of Ooty, Kandal, Finger Post, Kotagiri ,Coonoor, Mettupalayam, Moyar, Masinagudi, Pillur Dam, Ponnani, Babusa Lane, Muthorai, Money Lodge, and Kullisollai, among others. We have also been very active with the Covid -19 affected families helping them with provisions, vaccinations, house repair and in some cases building of homes.

This Trust was founded in 1983 by Mrs. Margit Stefansson, from Sweden.  Her efforts were monumental in helping the poor and the destitute of the Nilgiris, She provided shelter, food, job opportunities and education to the families and children. As a result, many families have been able to enjoy happy and fulfilling lives. Smyrna has been able to benefit around 10,000 children to attend schools and colleges on a “year on year” basis, These children come from single parent families, children staying with grandparents, children of diseased parents, and orphans who have been staying with their guardians.

STAFF RETREAT AT SMYRNA CAMPUS AT PONNANI

In addition to this, we at Smyrna have also been able to create a ecosystem where every building is connected to solar systems which provides lighting to the campus. A 50,000 litre water tank stores rain water which is used to irrigate the garden and the organic farming projects in the campus. The Smyrna property is home to a number of old, rare species of trees. We also generate our own funds through our organic vegetable garden, tree saplings, tea-garden, strawberry cultivation, chicken coop, bakery, canteen and grocery store. Our social projects provide housing for the homeless, house repair, water connection, electricity and sanitation to many. We also provide toilets in schools and to the homes of our sponsored children

Our other important projects are our “New World Centre” where we provide treatment for physically and mentally challenged children and adults in the rehabilitation centre. Our old age home “Smyrna Shelter”, where we house the elderly who have no place to stay. We give provisions to more than 50 elderly women who are abandoned by their families in Ooty and regions in and around, and beyond.

PROJECTS

Smyrna has taken up many projects from the past which cater to the needs of the under privileged and also to create a self- sustaining ecosystem . Some of the projects are into organic farming, horticulture, poultry, bakery, vocational courses, and many more.
Take a glimpse of some of the activities below

SPONSOR PROJECT

One of the main focuses of our work is supporting the education of disadvantaged children, by taking care of their expenses, right from primary to college level, and help in  securing jobs and job-oriented training — all of which has been happening from  1985.  Currently we support more than 500 children in the regions of Ooty and other regions of Nilgiris district.

The children we help are either orphans, children of single parents, children of deceased parents, tribal children or are from families that can no longer support them, due to severe financial and health difficulties. We do not focus on any one caste or religion or ethnic background, But help any child in need and provide them with what we can, thus ensuring them a bright future. We provide uniforms, note books, shoes and pay their school fees. We also encourage them to attend a monthly “sponsor meet” with the staff of the Smyrna Sponsor Department, and also a resource person. We discuss their circumstances and provide counselling in academics  and other personal areas of need. For some children, whose families are in dire situations we repair their houses, provide electricity, water and sanitation. We help them with accommodation in their school hostels and  provide for their food and medical expenses. We also provide Career guidance and character building classes with the help of various resource persons after they finish their studies. Our aim is to ensure that the children become independent and self-sufficient. We are constantly looking for more sponsor parents to join us in providing a better future for our young children.Recently a couple from Bangalore have sponsored 3 girls who were deserving, they are in 3rd Class, 8th class and 1oth class.

VOCATIONAL COURSES

The  areas in and around the Nilgris district which we support are home to many poor workers and farmers. Their children find it virtually impossible to enroll The  areas in and around the Nilgris district which we support, is home to many poor workers and farmers. Their children find it virtually impossible to enroll in any mainstream technical or computer courses due to financial and travel constraints. To help such children, Smyrna has started a venture to provide training in many disciplines. We have also partnered with many institutions to provide such training.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY CENTER

We also have plans for programmes for differently-abled children, to motivate them and give them skills using their talents, hence boosting their self-confidence. Through these activities we have also been able to cultivate a confident and healthy community for the differently-abled children that we support.

SOCIAL PROJECTS

There are a number of social projects undertaken by Smyrna Ooty that operate in the campus and within our local communities. These are funded by various friends of Smyrna, by sponsors and through some of the money raised by the projects we operate in our Smyrna campus.

You can be a part of these projects as well! If you are interested, please contact us by signing up below so that we can get in touch with you.

SMYRNA SHELTER (HOME FOR THE AGED)

In this fast-paced modern world, neglecting elderly women seems to be one of the prevailing problems which our community has been particularly facing. In order to counter this problem, the Smyrna Shelter was established 10 years ago, as the “Home for the Aged”. At present due to Covid -19 we have taken in 5 women , who are old and disabled and abandoned by their families. They are loved and well taken care of in the Smyrna community and are enjoying the flora and fauna of our beautiful campus. We look after their health as well – they have been vaccinated against Covid-19.  We also have seen that they are so energetic that they have started to take up their own activities in the campus like bag- making and crocheting. This has truly helped them to forget about their past and live a peaceful life in the present and in the future

COVID 19 CARE PROJECTS

In the past we used to provide hot lunches for the aged as well as the children who were residing in the hostel. But due to the pandemic and schools and  hostels closing, we have started giving out provisions to the people as well the ones who are affected by Covid 19. As of now more than 1000 parcels have been given to various areas in and around the Nilgris district and in neighboring ones as well, We have our sister projects in Kotagiri and Ponnani where we have also helped the people residing there with whatever aid they need to survive this pandemic.
